  • The Rape of Dinah
  • Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, leader of the region, was strongly attracted to Dinah, daughter of Jacob, and was in love with the young woman. When he saw Dinah, he immediately seized her and lay with her by force.
  • Get me this young woman for a wife.
  • Hamor’s Appeal to Jacob and His Sons
  • Giving our sister to an uncircumcised man would be a disgrace for us. You must be circumcised. Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters in marriage.. But if you do not listen to us and be uncircumcised, we will take our sister and go.
  • My son, Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife. Thus you can live among us. Settle and move about freely in our lands and acquire holdings here.
  • Revenge of Jacob’s Sons
  • Because he desired Jacob's daughter, the young man wasted little time in acting on the offer. So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and told them of the urgent request.
  • These men are friendly toward us. Let them settle in the land and move about in it freely. We can take their daughters in marriage and give our daughters to them.
  • But only on the condition that every male among us be circumcised as they themselves are. Let us just agree with them, so that they will settle among us.
  • Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah; but since his sons were out in the field with his livestock, Jacob kept quiet until they came home.
  • The Massacre of All the Males
  • On the third day, Dinah's brothers, Simeon and Levi, each seized their swords and marched on the unsuspecting city, slaughtering all the males. They went to Hamor’s house to get Dinah.
  • Jacob’s sons were enraged when they heard the news about what Shechem had done to Dinah. The news also outraged the people in Israel. Hamor, father of Shechem, and Shechem himself appealed to Jacob and his sons for a favor- to give Dinah to Shechem as his wife.
  • Jacob Goes up to Bethel
  • God told Jacob to go up to Bethel, settle there, and build an altar to the God who appeared to him while he fled his brother Esau.
  • Get rid of the foreign gods among you; then purify yourselves and change your clothes.
  • Let us now go up to Bethel so that I can build an altar there to God who answered me on the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.
  • Everyone who left the city gate listened to Hamor and his son Shechem and were circumcised. But little did they know the true intentions of Dinah's brothers
  • Jacob Was Named Israel
  • After successfully rescuing Dinah, The city was then sacked by Jacob's other sons, who had followed the massacre. They took everything they owned, including the children and women, and robbed everything in the houses. While their father, Jacob, shows concerns about being revenged by the ones they’ve murdered, but they retorted that their sister should not be given to this unworthy man.
  • Release Dinah! Should our sister be treated like a prostitute?
  • Then, while they were leaving, a great terror descended upon the surrounding villages, causing them to flee . As a result, Jacob and his company landed in Luz (now Bethel) in the land of Canaan. He constructed an altar there and named it El-Bethel. Because it was there, while escaping his brother, that God showed himself to him.
  • When Jacob returned from Paddan-aram, God appeared to him and blessed him once again. He was called Israel, and he built a stone pillar in the spot where God had spoken to him, and he made a libation and poured forth oil on it. Bethel was the name Jacob gave to the spot where God talked to him.
  • Your name is Jacob. You will no longer be named Jacob, but Israel will be your name. I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations, will stem from you, and kings will issue from your loins. The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you; and to your descendants after you I will give the land.
