Storyboard Text

  • "Sirens" From The Odyssey By Homer
  • "This way, oh turn your bows,Achaea's glory,As all the world allows--Moor and be merry" (Homer 719-722)
  • The Warning
  •
  • A Request
  • Tie me up.
  • Comic by: Emily Range
  • Resistance
  • Sirens are told to "lure sailors to their destruction" (Homer 666). The resistance of their voices becomes more difficult the more one is to listen so if lucky like Odysseus, guidance can be given on "how to avoid the dangers" one might face because once you get sucked in, a savior is just a distant flicker of the flames that are holding you captive (Homer 665).
  • Temptation
  •
  • This is torture! "Untie me" (Homer 747).
  • To resist the seductive singing while they journey, Odysseus isn't the first one to request restraints, "you are to tie me up," (Homer 695). He tells his sailors not to let him free despite any pleading, he wants to be tied as "tight as a splint" because once a Siren's got a hold on you, they hold you tight and pull you closer (Homer 695).
  • Advancing
  • Before being tied up Odysseus deafens his sailors laying wax "thick on their ears" so they wouldn't worry about the temptations (Homer 713). As the ship approaches new waters Odysseus is tied up, readying himself to beat the soothing singing upon him.
  • The voices made Odysseus "crave to listen," his one and only request to be untied (Homer 746). The lovely voices of the sirens are enough to make the strongest fall weak but with cooperation of a few sailors and battling with desire it isn't impossible to sail away with everyone.
  • As the sirens "dropped under the sea rim" and "their singing dwindled away" peace was instated once more (Homer 752-753). The men return on their journey after the encounter with creatures that could easy swallow someone whole. Odysseus free from the ropes and agonizing yearning to be engulfed in "the flames."
