- Did you see that around the Earth? That´s space debri, also called space junk, is defunct human-made objects in space which no longer serve a useful function. I´ll show you what can be done about the problem.
- Technological fixes include removing space debris from orbit with nets, harpoons, or lasers. Deorbiting a satellite at the end of its life is a managerial fix.
- But engineering or managerial solutions like these won't solve the debris problem because they don't change the incentives for operators. Here is where we need a cooperation of the countries.
- More than 22,000 pieces of space junk are being tracked today as they zip around our planet, But there's far too much of the stuff for the U.S. government to keep track of on its own, so cooperation is required to improve the country's space situational awareness (SSA) capabilities.
- Like my friend Helms said during a recent trip to Israel. "We must partner with other nations and enterprises to achieve mutually beneficial goals, and at the top of our priorities is the development of comprehensive SSA,"
