  • Petition of Power
  •  In 1603 James I becomes king. James starts conflict with parliament about who has power, religious issues and money, James' I son, Charles I takes the throne, Charles I also believes in the divine right of kings so he continues his fathers conflicts with parliament, so parliament creates the Petition of Power.
  • Habeas Corpus 
  • The civil war starts in 1624 between the round-heads and the cavaliers ( parliament and kings soldiers). The round heads win the war, and behead Charles I, abolishing the monarchy and making room for commonwealth.
  • Oliver Cromwell created a military dictatorship during his ruling. He then passed away in 1658, giving the army the chance to restore the monarchy. Two years later Charles II takes over the throne.
  • bill of rights 
  •  Charles II does not believe in the divine right of kings so he isn't a threat to parliament. During his ruling the Habeas Corpus law was put in place making it so only people who practice Anglicanism could attend school, join the military, or be a priest.
  • Charles II brother, James II becomes king in 1685. James II however is openly catholic and that worries parliament, they did not take any action because he had no one to take over the throne when he passed. Then James II had a son so parliament took matters into their own hands.
  • English nobles encouraged the Netherlands to invade and take over the throne. James II realizes all of England is against him so he flees to France. William and Mary take the throne, and they create the Bill of rights with parliament, turning England into a constitutional monarchy.
