  • The Rise and Fall of Ancient RomeBy: Gabe Litvin
  • Ancient Rome once conquered all of the Mediterranean but then historical events occurred that resulted in their end as a powerful empire.
  • In the next couple of decades, Rome grew to a city that covered nearly 500 square miles. It was in a "transitional" period, and it established a republic, which is a form of government.
  • So with this new government we the citizens get the power now?
  • Yup! We get the power and now we get to vote for our leader. There will not be another leader like Tarquin The Proud again.
  • Rome was founded in 753 BC by Romulus and Remus.
  • We will use this land to make a city. Let's call it...Rome!
  • Ok!
  • Rome only got more and more powerful, gaining more and more territory until they eventually conquered all of the Mediterranean.
  • I do not think anybody will be able to stop Rome's army.
  • Yeah, they are just too strong and powerful.
  • Julius Caesar was appointed as dictator for life in 44 BC. This didn't sit well with lots of people who thought he had too much power and it led to his assassination. After his death, a Civil War broke out in Rome.
  • Oh no. Not again. What has this place become.
  • Three of Caesar's supporters ended the Civil War and then ruled Rome for 10 years. Another Civil War then started again, in which one of the ruler's won and then became ruler of Rome. His name was Augustus.
  • Everybody Calm down. I will bring you peace. Just watch.
  • For 207 years, peace reigned throughout the empire. This period of peace and prosperity was called the "Pax Romana".
  • Augustus is doing a great job right now. He is creating a system of government that will last for centuries.
  • Yeah, and it is so effective as well!
  • After the death of Augustus, the Julio-Claudians (relatives of Julio Ceasar) ruled the Empire. After the death of the last Julio-Claudian, Rome turned into an unstable and chaotic Empire again.
  • I am going to be the ruler
  • No, I am going to be the ruler
  • Rome then went into crisis under new leaders who couldn't deal with the large empire. Rome's economy weakened, and they were in military and political turmoil, through the invasions of the Barbarians and Huns. All of this eventually led to the fall of the Roman Empire.
  • Oh no
  • Rome is ruined
  • Today, we still see Latin, the language created by Rome, used in many parts of the world. We also see Rome's influence on art and architecture being used today in many buildings and artistic pieces.
  • It's amazing how Ancient Rome has influenced society today right?
  • Yeah! Like the White House behind us for example!
