Storyboard Text

  • Hey! My name is Augusta Savage. I was a sculptor in the Harlem Renaissance, and an influential artist.
  • I was born February 29, 1892, in Green Cove Springs FL. I love sculpting, I've been doing it ever since I was young. As a child I would use river clay to sculpt, and I put my education on the backburner, although my father didn't approve.
  • When I got older, I attended the Cooper Union Private Institute in NYC, and went on to attend the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Europe.
  • I grew up to be a portrait artist in the Harlem Renaissance. I also continued to break racist and sexist stereotypes. I have worked with many famous Harlem Renaissance artists.
  • Augusta died in 1962 from cancer, ending her sculpting career, but her legacy still stays strong in the heart of the Harlem Renaissance.
