  • Maybe it's another New York Citythe southerners talk about. Maybe that's wherethere is money falling from the sky, diamonds specklingthe sidewalks. Here there is only gray rock, cooland treeless as a bad dream. Who could lovethis place-where no pine trees grow, no porch swing moveswith weight ofyour grandmotherThis place is a Greyhound bushumming through the night then letting outa deep breath inside a placecalled Port Authority. This place is a driver yelling,New York City, last stop. Everybody off. This place is loud and strangeand nowhere I'm ever going to callhome.

  • This poem also stands out to me because it talks about how much she hated New York but what she finds and sees in New York changes as the story ends. At the beginning and end of the story, it shows how much she has grown and how strong of a person she has become. She was a little girl growing up in the South not knowing much. Moving to New York and being an African American writer and accomplishing her dreams. When Jackie moved to New York she met a girl named Maria. Maria helped Jackie and showed her true self around her. If Jackie didn't move to New York she wouldn't have had all of these opportunities. Another person that stood out to me was her grandfather "daddy gunner". He was Jackies helping hand, he listened, comforted her, talked to her, loved her, helped her, and so much more. When he died it was very hard for her because he helped her at all times and was always there for her. I think without these two people and New York in Jackie's life she wouldn't have the motivation and right mindset to accomplish everything she has done.
