Back when she was young, Hidayah's parents would call her from her room when there were visitors to their house so that she could salam them. Hidayah resented the ritual but now it seemed like the most natural thing to do. A few passers-by looked on curiously as Hidayah took hold of her parents' hands, bent down slowly and pressed it to her nose. This was a private gesture to her, a way to reconcile the solemnity of respect with the tenderness of affection.
