1. Have you ever wondered how these rocks ended up in the stream?
3. What does the term erosion mean?
4. Well, erosion is a geological process where weathered materials are moved from one place to another. This happens when external forces such as wind, water, ice, and or gravity are present, this process usually happens overtime.
2. Yes, these rocks moved here by virtue of erosion.
1. Hmm....I think I understand now, but, does that mean the soil were standing on is also formed from erosion.
4. Ah yes, In my geography class I learned this.Mechanical Weathering, is the breakdown process of rocks/minerals into smaller pieces.Chemical weathering refers to changes made to materials composition via chemical reaction.
2. It sure is! However that is not the only thing, weathering is another factor that works cohesively with erosion to form soil. FYI weathering is a process that concentrates on the natural and chemical decay/change of materials.
3. There is actually two main types of weathering: Mechanical and Chemical
1. Fun Fact: These materials that are exposed to the earth's conditions that are subject to weathering are called outcrops
3. That makes sense especially since this dirt has so many pebbles and crushed minerals
2. Wow, I did not know that! But, back to the formation of soil. Minerals from weathering is responsible for 45 percent in the majority of soils .
4. I can tell the state of the soil was heavily influenced by sheet-wash. Sheet-wash are flows of water that assist in the eroding of soil and travel of sediments.
Look what erosion has done to the San Clemente beach. Its polluting the ocean water with all the minerals and materials through the sand it washes away and in tune decreasing the sand levels rapidly. You cannot forget about the aqua life, where ecosystems are being shifted causing unsuitable conditions for plants and other animal life.
Its affecting the tourism of this area and also leading to financial problems for local shop business owners and other properties, possibly causing them to relocate.
AND THATS NOT TO MENTION THE EFFECTS OF FUTURE CLIMATE CHANGE!!!!
Yes, because of this erosion, sea-levels may rise causing severe storm conditions which could be as bad as natural disasters. Furthermore, there can be a change in ocean temperatures which would cause detrimental damage to beach life and increase erosion in structures
