- Maximilien Robespierre was a dictator and lead the Committee of Public Safety. He made a rule that was called the Reign of Terror. During his ruling nearly 40,000 people were killed and 16,000 were killed by the guillotine. 15% of the victims contained clergy and nobles one of which was Marie Antoinette and the remaining were all from the Third Estate.
- In July 1794, members of the National Convention decided to turn on Robespierre because they were scared about their own safety. They arrested him and sentenced him for execution. And on July 28 Robespierre was killed by the guillotine. People and classes started to dramatically change after that because they were tired of the reign of terror and the outragging prices of bread, salt and a lot more.
- A new government was created and named the directory, a place where power was given to the upper middle class which was 2 houses, the legislature and the executive body. A year later (1796), the directory decided to have Napoleon lead a new French army. When he successfully did that he became famous and well known. In 1799 the directory started to fall apart and started to lose the lack of control and confidence of the French people. Later on that year in november, Napoleon and his troops surrounded the national legislature and scared off most of the members. Napoleon took over and became a dictator, and on December 2nd, Napoleon upgraded himself to be an emperor.
