"What happens when ordinary people are put in extraordinary situations?"
Hi I'm Zinbardo and I want to test some psychological effects on you!
Me and 23 others are interested in being one of your participants. 15 dollars a day sounds like a bargain
Zinbardo made an experiment at Stanford University where he aimed to test the psychological effect of becoming a prisoner or prison guard. In this, 24 male students (selected from a list of 75) were randomly assigned prisoner or guard.

"A simulated prison. Unexpected arrests. The experiment begins."
I'm the guard and you're the prisoner. You will have to listen to me from now on
Prisoners were arrested outside there homes before being bagged and tagged at a local Police station before being moved to an undisclosed location (the basement of Stanford University)The guards were then allowed to make up prison rules. The guards made the prisoners do press-ups as punishments and the prisoners were stripped of their identity and were given numbers instead.

"Less than 36 hours. The pressure mounts."
You started a riot!! You will stay in here until I say so!
During the second day the prisoners began to riot barcoding doors with beds ripping off numbers etc. Ring leaders that disobeyed orders from the 'guards' were put into solitary confinement.

"The power shifts."
If you do not listen to me then you will get a beating!
Later in the experiment the guards became more violent and more extreme. They would refuse to let prisoners out of the cells. One of the guards soon became known as 'John Wayne' due to his violence and brutality towards the prisoners. One prisoner even showed extreme signs of anxiety however he was not allowed to leave.

"Stripped of identity"
The guards made prisoners clean toilets with their bare hands and they wake them up at 2:30 am with whistles and batons. At night they would also sexually humiliate (striping them, beating them etc) the prisoners when they weren't looking.

"Terminated"
What you are condoning is unacceptable. You are not the man I thought you were. Stop this immediately or I will leave you forever!
Eventually day 6 would turn out to be the last day of Zimbardo's experiment. This is because the power of the guards was almost total and the prisoners obeyed their orders without question.Zimbardo's girlfriend and postgraduate psychologist objected strongly and convinced him and the other researchers to stop the study.
