  • What is Midah K'Neged Midah?
  • Where do we find this in the story of the 10 Martyrs?
  • Modern day example
  • Midah K'Neged Midah basically means measure for measure. It is when someone (person a) does something cruel on another person (person b) because person b's relative or friend did something to person a's relative or friend.
  • What impact does Midah K'Neged Midah have on society?
  • We find this when 10 of Joseph's brothers tortured him. Some may think Benjamin tortured him but Benjamin was too young to have known to torture Joseph. Years and years later, Hadrian, Roman ruler, tortured 10 of Israel's Rabbis and killed them to get revenge on Joseph's 10 brothers although Hadrian wasn't even a Jew so it was none of his business. The Rabbis didn't torture Joseph so they didn't deserve to be killed.
  • What other stories in Jewish History have we also seen this in?
  • Here is an example of Midah K'Neged Midah that can happen in modern day. A girl buys an iphone 12 while she is shopping, When she is at the local park with her friend, he drops her phone on purpose and it smashes. The girl asks her friend why he did it and he explains that the girl's father did the same thing to his mother.
  • How can we apply this principle to our lives?
  • It can make rivalries between people and can end in violence. People could get hurt. Or worse, killed.
  • Another story we've seen this in would be the ten plagues. In Egypt when it was the Pesach story, Pharaoh made the Jewish People his slaves. Many years after that while the Jews were still working, Pharaoh's grandson was the new Pharaoh. And God punished him and the Egyptians for treating the Jewish people horribly.
  • We can try to avoid conflict with everyone. If someone does something to us that we don't like, someone related or who is friends with us may do the same thing to the other person's friend or relative. But we should try and avoid Midah K'Neged Midah as much as possible.
