  • Rising Action

  • Climax
  • Dialogue: Mathilde buys a dress using 400 francs and asks Madame Forestier to borrow jewelry. This is dialogue because they are talking to eachother and rising action because it builds up to when she loses the necklace
  • Falling Action
  • Setting: Mathilde and her husband go to the dance. Setting because without this part, the story would not have her lose the necklace or get the necklace at all.
  • Resolution
  • I lost your necklace and bought a new one to replace it
  • My husband and i have been working to pay back the people we got loans from
  • The necklace was only worth 500 francs and you should have told me
  • External Conflict: After the dance is over they leave and discover the necklace is missing. This is external conflict because they lose the necklace and have to pay it back. Climax because this is the main event of the story.
  • Where is the necklace?
  • Setting: They find a jewelry store that sells the necklace a couple days later. This is falling action because this builds up to the resolution. Without this part they would never have gotten the replacement necklace.
  • Jewelry
  • This store has an identical necklace
  • Theme and Situational Irony: Mathilde visits Madame Forestier 10 years later and she tells her they lost the original necklace and bought a new one. This is the theme because you should always tell someone if you do something bad like lose something and situational irony because she paid all that money for something that was way less. Resolution because this is the final part of the book and when she explains what happened
