In 1898, he arrived in British Honduras, today known as Belize. For the year 1900, Fr. Joseph Muffles was appointed to work in the Orange Walk District alongside Fr. Piemonte.
Fr. Muffles spoke very little Spanish at first, but he soon learned to communicate in it and even preached in Maya.
Fr. Joseph Muffles later became the priest of La Inmaculada Church for twenty-one years after Fr. Piemonte's death.
There had been a Yellow Fever outbreak when Fr. Muffles was ministering at Saint John's College. Fr. Muffles and a large group of students were quarantined at Sargent's Caye. Fortunately, Fr. Muffles and the students dodged the Yellow Fever. Until his death on January 23, 1931, Fr. Joseph Muffles taught Religion and served as a counselor at SJC.
The government health authorities ordered the College to close due to the outbreak of the dreaded disease. The students had to report to the Belize city hospital everyday.
Matron Roberts and Dr. Karl Heusner worked tirelessly with the Belize City students and all of them survived the Yellow Fever.
