  • One of the main themes in The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is Blaming others and trying to find a scapegoat can lead to negative consequences . First, on pg.10 when the residents blame Les he gets mad at them for not believing his claims that he's not the monster. This shows that by blaming Les as the alien, the residents have lost an ally for blaming him. Also, on pg. 12-13 Charlie says You best watch who you're seen with Steve! Until we get this all straightened out, you ain't above suspicion yourself which upsets Steve and causes conflict between all the neighbors. This shows that by blaming Steve the residents starting building conflict by blaming each other. Finally, On pg. 16-17 all of the residents start to blame each other. This shows that blaming each other can lead to consequences because once the residents blamed each other they all burst out fighting each other. Inconclusion, Blaming others and trying to find a scapegoat can lead to negative consequences is the main theme of The Monsters are due on Maple Street by Red Serling.
