At this part of the book, Pip is telling Ravi that his brother, Sal Singh - who killed himself after everyone thought that he murdered his girlfriend - was innocent and wasn't the person that murdered her. The photo that Pip is referring to is one that Sal's friend posted on his Facebook the night before Sal was found dead. The picture was proof that Sal was with his friends at the time his girlfriend was murdered because Sal was the one that took the picture.
"‘Ravi. ... Sal couldn’t possibly have done it. He’s innocent; the photo proves it'" (68).
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson
Naomi was one of Sal's close friends who was in the picture their friend posted on Facebook. Naomi is also Pip's best friend's sister, so they are close. Naomi was one of Sal's alibi's, but she lied to Pip about what time Sal went out because Pip found that out based on the photo, so she needs answers from Naomi.
OK. I'll tell you everything that happens.
You should go alone, she can't even look at me. Be careful.
We need to talk to Naomi.
Pip is at Naomi's house, along with Max Hastings, who is her's and Sal's friend who was in the picture. To the right of him is Naomi and on the far left is Cara, Pip's best friend/Naomi's sister. Pip is calling Max "Nancy" because he posted the picture on his secret account in a fake name, which was Nancy. Naomi started getting scared when she saw the picture, because unlike Max, she noticed that her phone was in the picture, and it said the time they took the picture at, and realized that Pip knew they lied about what time Sal had left.
"‘So, Nancy, who took that picture of the four of you?'" (70)
"‘Yeah, OK, so maybe Sal took the photo. It’s not like we said he wasn’t there at all. He must have taken this earlier on in the night." (70).
"‘My phone. ...The time is on my phone'" (70).
Pip's voice started to shake as she refused to let her forming tears run down her cheeks. Max was very angry and Naomi began to cry. Cara was so confused as to what was going on, but she started to piece the puzzle together and get anxious. Pip was just trying to get answers out of them, but she got the ones that she was least expecting.
Why did you lie about what time Sal left the house? You wanted to take away his alibi so you lied. Why?
Because someone made us. An unknown number texted us and threatened us to lie because they knew about something horrible that we did.
With emotions high and running everywhere, Cara and Naomi were sobbing while Naomi was telling Pip what the anonymous person knew. Pip was astonished and Max was furious.
It was on New Years Eve. We were all drunk, Sal wasn't there, and we were stupid and let Max drive us home. He hit a man and we thought he was dead, so we panickedand drove to Max's house. We never told anyone, but somehow this unknown number knew and was going to use it against us if we didn't do what they told us to do.
Sal was innocent. Someone killed Andie then killed Sal to make it look like suicide after making sure everyone thought he was guilty. You knew that your best friendwas innocent for 5 years.
Pip finally figured out why Max, Naomi, and their friends lied to the police, but she wasn't happy at all. She agreed to not take the picture to the police after seeing her best friend breaking down over the thought of losing her sister. Pip told them that she'd find another way to prove Sal's innocence and that's preciselywhat she did.
I won't go to the police with it, Cara. I don't need that to prove Sal's innocence, though it would be much easier with the photo.
Pip, please don't go to the police with the photo. I can't get my sister taken away, she's all I have left.
