  • The war arrives at Australia and Tom, Harry and Wayne go to war. Silvey is really worried that one of "the guys" will get hurt. The year has ended, and Silvey stops writing in her diary.

  • In 1945 there were fewer than 600 Chinese in Auckland and a total of 4940 in New Zealand. The 2013 census records 118,230 Chinese in Auckland, from a nationwide total of 171,411. The huge increase is reflected in the Chinese faces seen in every occupation and walk of life, the many stores selling Chinese goods and foodstuffs and the well-patronised Chinese restaurants.Descendants of the early Chinese of Greys Avenue have been absorbed into the wider community and accepted as valued New Zealanders. These Chinese New Zealanders are successful in business, the professions, academically, in research and the arts.Acceptance of their culture has added vibrancy to multicultural New Zealand. It is a far cry from the days when the Chinese were classed as ‘aliens’ and called the ‘Yellow Peril’. Auckland’s Chinatown and the reason for its existence is now a distant memory.
