- In 1517 Martin Luther, a former monk, nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the All Saints Church. The 95 Theses was a list of complaints about the Roman Catholic Church, specifically he was against the sale of indulgences, which means the church was having people pay to get rid of their sins.

- I refuse to recant my statements about the church!
- Then, in October of 1518 Luther had a meeting with the cardinal Thomas Cajetan, who insisted he recant his statements by order of the Pope. Martin refused.
- I demand you recant your statements about the church!
- In 1519 Luther publicly stated the the bible does not give the Pope the right to interpret the scripture
- The Pope has no authority to tell you what the bible says!
- In 1521 the Church had Luther excommunicated, which meant he was no longer a part of the church. He could no longer participate in church activities and would be condemned to hell when he died.
- Excommunicate him!!!!
- After he was excommunicated, the church then released the Edict of Worms, which claimed Luther to be a heretic, which banned his literature, required his arrest, and said he could be killed without punishment from the law. Worms was a city in Germany. Luther was in Germany when the edict was posted. It also made it so that giving Luther food and shelter was a crime.

- Luther ended up hiding out in Wartburg Castle in Germany. His friends and family helped hide him.
