- Maycomb was home to me, Jean Louise Finch. I lived with my father, a lawyer, Atticus, and my older brother Jem. We had a cook, Calpurnia.
- Maycomb was a quite town down in Alabama. Not much ever happened there that was of much need to notice.
- This story starts the summer we meet Dill.
- Dill was the nephew of one of our neighbors, Miss Rachel. We found him hiding in a collard patch in Miss Rachel's yard.
- We had neighbors, the Radley's. They were distant and kept to themselves. One of them was named Boo. Boo had not left his house in years. It was said he was crazy. We feared the Radley house. We feared Boo.
- Dill was not afraid of the Radley house. Or he at least said he was not afraid. That's why when Dill dared Jem that he would not even go past the front gate of the Radley house, Jem ran up and touched the front. We ran for our lives.
- Summer ended and Dill returned home. Jem had been going to school for a few years and I had always stayed home with Calpurnia. But this was my first year of school. Atticus and Calpurnia wished me good luck and Jem and I headed off to school.
- When I tried to tell her that Miss Caroline got mad at me. I was furious at Billy for making a teacher mad at me on the first day, so I tried to beat him up. instead, Jem got to me and invited Billy over for dinner.
- Our teacher was named Miss Caroline. When it was time for lunch she asked Billy Cunningham if he had lunch. When he said no she offered him a quarter. She was new and did not know that you can't offer the Cunninghams anything.
