My name is John Robert Lewis and I was born on February 21, 1940 near Troy Alabama. My parents were farmers and since little I've been inspired to be a preacher. SInce the age of five I have preached to my chickens on the farm.

In 1956 I became an ardent admire of MLK with my main focus of improving the lots of black on earth. During fall I applied to Troy state university. After not receiving anything I wrote to MLK and got an invite from him to come to Montgomery to speak face-to-face
From 1960-1962 I participated in sit-ins, mass meetings and the landmark “FreedomRides” of 1961 that tested racial segregation in the South.
On January 1963 I started serving as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. I then went to Selma, Alabama to help the black vote.
Eightmonths later and just days after helping Martin Luther King Jr. organize the March onWashington, I was arrested for the first of more than 40 times, for civil rights activities inSelma. Later on bloody sunday I got beaten by an Alabama state trooper putting me in the hospital for two days. I kept going and on March 7, 1965 led some 600 peaceful demonstrators on a march in support of voting rights that departed from Selma, with the capitol in Montgomery, Alabama,
1971 I take over as executive director of the Voter education project a program of the southern regional council. During 1977 I lost when making my first bid for congress in metro, Atlenta. I later in 1981 win my first political office with my elections as member of the Atlanta city council where I serve till 1986.

November 4,1986 I was elected to congress representing Georgia's 5th distract. I was re-elected 16 times. IN 2001 I received the John F. Kennedy profile in courage award for lifetime achievements. I then got presented the Presidential medal of freedom, by President Barack Obama in 2011.
I continued to do my protests and later reunited with Obama and George W. Bush and thousand other in Selma for the 50th anniversary of Bloody SUnday. In 2016 I lead a Democratic sit-in on the House floor to protest inaction on guncontrol measures
