- King Numitor once ruled Alba Longa. His brother, Amulius, removed him from the throne, killed his male heirs, and forced his daughter, Rhea Silvia, to become a Vestal Virgin. Vestal Virgins were priestesses of Vesta, goddess of the hearth and they were not allowed to marry or have children. While in the service to the temple, Rhea Silvia became pregnant, supposedly by the god of war, Mars.She gave birth to twin boys.Amulius, now king, feared the boyswould one day grow up to challengehim for the throne. Fearing divine retribution for killing the sons of Mars, Amulius had the infants left to die of exposure to the elements.

- A servant put the boys in a basket on the Tiber River. The basket floated down the river eventually; the babies were found by a wolf.The she-wolf fed the two babies her milk and protected them from danger. A woodpecker brought them food to eat. A group of shepherds came across the wolf and the babies. One shepherd, named Faustulus, took the babies home to his wife Larentia who fed and raised them to be shepherds

- The boys grew up to be tall and strong. They had a band of loyal followers. They would take stolen items from robbers and distribute the items to local shepherds.The robbers attacked Romulus and Remus was taken to the King. Romulus gathered people to free Remus. Their true identities were revealed and King Amulius was killed. The crown was given back to Numitor and the boys stood to inherit Alba Longa when he died.
