- In this chapter, Rowan is introduced and you get to see scythe Faraday glean for the first time in the book. Kohl Whitlock, a very popular kid at Rowan's school, is gleaned. Rowan in defiance of this happening supports Kohl through his death and that gives Faraday the idea to take Rowan on as an apprentrice.
- Chapter 17 The Seventh Commandment
- In this Chapter Scythe Faraday is informing Rowan and Citra that he has chosen them to be his apprentices. They have different reactions, with Citra getting angry because she does not want to spend her life killing people. Then of course they are both still thinking of their families and how them being scythes will help them.
- Chapter 29 They Called it Prison
- In this Chapter, Rowan is forced to pick the next person that Scythe Faraday Gleans based on the parameters given to him. This is very difficult for Rowan considering the idea that scythes work with no bias and he makes the final decision based on a small difference the people have in comparison. There are also different ideas represented by the man gleaned about how the smallest of things can get you gleaned.

- About halfway through the book Scythe Faraday has self-gleaned, so Rowan and Citra are now apprentices to other Scythes. Citra to Scythe Curie, and Rowan to Scythe Goddard. They both begin to learn the new ways of gleaning from their new scythes, whether they like the new ways or not, they are now their ways for the next 6 months.
- The Scythedom believes that Citra has murdered Scythe Faraday, They believe this because they think she was deleting pictures of Scythe Faraday on the day of his death when she was really just trying to actually solve his murder. She escapes custody and flees the region.
- I'm Escaping
- Citra is given the scythe's ring officially becoming a scythe. of course, because she is tasked to glean Rowan for this competition. She starts the gleaning by punching him and his cheek starts to bleed causing him to get immunity and the following raucous allows Rowan to flea before they can inflict any sort of punishment.
