Theme: Friendship
You can have mine. I ate already
Theme: Courage
I wont go!
In the story Chains, the author uses family as one of he themes. For example, when Ruth laughs at one of the jokes that Madam Lockton makes, Isabel takes the blame for it and get's hit. In the text Curzon says, ""The little one is your sister? That's why you took the blow meant for her, isn't it?" (38) This shows that Isabel would do anything to protect her sister even if it means she will get hurt in the process.
The author uses the theme friendship in the story. For instance when Isabel is very hungry and eats all of her food, Curzon kindly offers her more. In the text Isabel says," “..It was the first decent bit of food I’d had since Jenny’s kitchen…When I licked the butter off my fingers he [Curzon] gave me his roll.” (38) This quote shows that Curzon cares for Isabel.
The author uses the theme courage in the story. To give an example, when Isabel and her family are getting sold, her father is protecting and fighting for them. In the story it says,"Poppa fought like a lion when they came for him, the strongest lion, roaring; it took five of them with hickory clubs..." (11). This quote shows that Poppa is being brave and courageous or his family even though that means he'll get hurt.
