  • In ''The Monsters are due on Maple Street '' by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is fear and suspicion can be destructive. Fear and suspicion can be destructive is a good theme for this story because according to page 673, residents of Maple Street were surrounding Les Goodman's house. They were surrounding his house because his car started all by itself and the people of Maple Street thought that was really suspicious. Then they started accusing Les Goodman of being the monster, and that led to arguing. This shows that fear and suspicion can be destructive because all the residents of Maple Street were all suspicious. This theme goes well with the story because according to page 679 the people of Maple Street saw a dark figure coming toward them. Then, Charlie panicked and pulled out a shotgun and shot the approaching figure. Then when the people of Maple Street went to go see what it was it wasn't a monster it was Pete Van Horn coming back from Floral Street to see if the power was out there too. This proves that fear and suspicion can be destructive because Charlie shot Pete thinking he was the monster because he was really scared. Since Charlie was scared and panicked now Pete is dead. Fear and suspicion can be destructive is a great theme for this story. Rod Serling writes on page 683, that after Charlie shot what he thought was the monster(Pete Van Horn). Then, everyone thinks Charlie is the monster, but then Charlie says that he knows who the monster is. Charlie says Tommy is the monster (which he is not) . After that everyone in Maple Street started accusing each other of being the monster. Then it became very chaotic, with the people throwing rocks, shooting things with rifles, and destroying things with hammers. Everyone was losing trust in each other. This is important because it is a good example why fear and suspicion can be destructive. For example, all the people who live in Maple Street, they were all scared and even more confused so they started accusing each other of being the monster. It is also very destructive, that they were destroying things with hammers and rifles. Maple Street use to be a safe calm environment, until this happened, and now it is an unsafe, chaotic, destructive place. All because everyone was scared and confused about what was going on. In conclusion the theme that goes very well with ''The Monsters are due on Maple Street'' by Rod Serling, is Fear and suspicion can be destructive. This information is important because it can teach people that if you are ever very scared, mad, or confused, Violence and being destructive, is never the answer for solving a problem.
