- Mr. James Dillingham Young or also known as "Jim" lived with his wife, Della in a furnished flat that cost $8 per week. Jim was being paid $30 per week. Now, his income was shrunk into $20 per week. But, they did not take it as a big problem and they still love to each other.
- I already count it three times, but I only have one dollar and eighty-seven cents for this Christmas?What should I do?
- Tomorrow will be Christmas Day. Della counts all of her money to buy a Christmas present for Jim. But, she cries because her money does not enough to buy it.

- Then, Della decided to sell her possession: her beautiful brown cascade long hair. She stopped to the sign: “Mne. Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds.” and decided to sell her hair to Madame. Madame buy her hair and spent two hours to cut Della's hair.
- Madame Sofronie, will you buy my hair?
- Mne. SofronieHair Goods of All Kinds
- I buy hair. Open your hat and let me see your hair.
- Hmm...okay.I will buy it for twenty dollars.
- After sell her hair, Della was ransacking the stores for Jim's present. Then, she found it at the last store and buy a platinum fob chain for Jim's gold watch. She spent $21 to buy the present. Then, she went back to her home.
- This chain will fit perfectly with his gold pocket watch!
- STORE
- At 7 o'clock, Jim came home from his job. As he saw his wife's new hair, his eyes were fixed upon Della and she cannot read his expression. She afraid that Jim will be mad at her for cut her beautiful hair.

- I cut it off and sold it, because I couldn't giving you a Christmas present.
- You won't mind, don't you?
- Dell, I don't think your haircut could make me love you any less. You better unwrap this present to know why I reacted like that before.
- You've cut off your hair!?
- Wow, what a beautiful comb! Don't worry Jim, my hair grows so fast!
- As they told each other to unwrap the presents, Della was surprised to see the comb inside of it. Jim also surprised to see to see the chops inside of it, because he already sell his possession: his gold pocket watch. Then, they decided to keep their Christmas present away for a while.
