Well, the Articles of Confederation were the first ever Constitution created by the U.S after we gained independence from Great Britain. They established a system of government for the U.S. The articles limited the power of the federal government because we didn't want a repeat of what happened with Great Britain.
What type of government did the Article of Confederation Create?
The states were given the power to raise an army, create a currency, the power to tax, the power to conduct foreign affairs and much more which made each of the states seem like their own country and it often caused confusion.
The Articles of Confederation created a central government with less power and gave the states a lot of power. The central government couldn't levy taxes, regulate commerce, enforce its laws and much more which gave the U.S many issues.
What were some of the strengths and weaknesses of the articles of confederation?
Some weaknesses were that it didn't give the federal government enough power and this broke apart the nation. It also gave the states too much independence. The federal government was not able to pay off their taxes from the war since only the state's had the power to do that and this made problems such as Shay's Rebellion which was a rebellion conducted by Daniels Shays to protest against too many taxes being placed. The federal government also didn't have any checks and balances since they only had the legislative branch which is the Congress and they didn't have an executive or a judiciary branch at the time.
Some strengths of the Articles of Confederation were that they gave the colonies a chance for unity since the US hardly a United Nation before it gained independence. It also gave the states a chance to go global and gain trade and help from other countries since it was officialy a independent nation. It also proved that a weak federal government was just as bad as a strong one and helped show the changes that would be needed to be made.
