- "I no longer felt anything except the lashes of the whip" (Wiesel 57). Elie is being whipped for walking in on Idek and a polish girl.
- Man vs nature
- " Long since, we had exceeded the limits of fatigue. Our legs moved mechanically, in spite of us, without us" (Wiesel 87). The march has exhausted them so much but they want to live so they keep on going even though the do not tell them to.
- Man vs society
- No Jews allowed
- "I did not fast. First of all to please my father who had borbiden me to do so. And then, there was no longer any reason for me to fast. I no longer accepted God's Silence" (Wiesel 69). Elie does not accept God's silence during this tragedy so he does not fast.
- "Don't let yourself be overcome by sleep, Eliezer. It's dangerous to fall asleep in snow. One falls asleep forever" (Wiesel). The men that have fallen asleep have let death consume them.
- "But new edicts were already being issued. We no longer had the right yo frequent restaurants or café, to travel by rail, to attend synagogue, to be on the streets after six o'clock in the evening. Then came the ghettos" ( Wiesel 11). The Jews were not allowed to leave their houses or go to restaurants or public transport.
