John Proctor presents Judge Danforth with a deposition that includes 91 signatures attesting to the innocence of the accused women. Danforth views this as a threat and calls for the arrests of everyone who signed the paper.
When Danforth is hearing Proctor's side of the story, Cheever interrupts to tell Danforth something completely unrelated to what they are talking about. Parris bounces off of Cheever's comment to point out that Proctor must not read the Gospel because he is acting as if he doesn't know upright men can do wrong.
When Hale confesses that he believes Abby is lying, she falls into a trance. She acts as if Mary has turned into a yellow bird and is bewitching her. The girls around her see Abby get into character and follow suit.
