- Offred is the main protagonist of Handmaid's Tale. She is a handmaid for Commander Waterford and is forced to potentially bear their child as she is still fertile. She bears the full psychological and physical burdens of being in the society of Gilead. She constantly wrestles with flashbacks from her 'past life' where she had a husband called Luke and a daughter. Her hope that she will be reunited with them again is what ultimately keeps her going.

- Moira
- That's all gone
- Moira is Offred's best friend from college. She is constantly looking for an escape and constantly defies the rules that have been set in place. Moira is a rebel. She eventually escapes the Red Center but gets caught before she can get out of Gilead. Later Offred reunites with Moira when Moria is working as a prostitute for the Commanders at a club. Moira is inspiring to many women in the Red Center but ultimately realizes that the society they are living in can destroy even the most resilient people.

- The Commander
- Better never means better for everyone. It always means worse, for some.
- The Commander is the head of the household where Offred is a handmaid. He starts to initiate a bit of an unusual relationship with Offred, playing scrabble with her and offering her different things as well as taking her to a club. He comes across as a kind man, but someone who is also deeply saddened by what is happening in Gilead. He appears to be another victim of Gilead, but also a very powerful person in Gilead.
