- The theme of The Monsters are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is Humans are our worst enemies. One example that supports this theme is on page 81 when Charlie accuses Steve of being a monster because he works late at night on a radio set. This shows that a single act of aggression leads to chaos. Also, on page 82 Charlie shot Pete Van Horn only because Tommy said it was a monster. This proves that Humans are our worst enemies because shooting Pete Van Horn is a major act of violence. This will cause the population to decrease and can lead to war, protests, and more violence. Lastly, on page 85 all the neighbors started to argue towards the end of the story and someone punched Steve in the face. This is a perfect example of how Humans are our worst enemies because a single punch can escalate a conflict. Due to this, Steve may want revenge. To sum up, Humans are our worst enemies is a perfect theme for The Monsters are Due on Maple Street .
