Bilbo wakes up late and runs to the inn where Thorin and the rest of the dwarves are meeting before they set off for the journey. He gets there just in time, and sees that they have a pony waiting for him. Then he remembers that he didn’t bring anything, but he borrows a cloak and other items from the dwarves.
When Bilbo goes to investigate the light, it turns out it was a fire with trolls around it named Bert, Tom, and William. They were sitting around the fire drinking ale, and Bilbo thought to go back and tell the dwarves, but he thought he could pick one of the troll’s pockets. In doing so he got caught, but William let him go because he wasn’t really big enough to be eaten and he was already full from dinner.
Bilbo and the rest of the dwarves arrive at a forest, where they have to stop because the weather was getting severe and they were hungry. That’s when they noticed that Gandalf was missing. While Thorin was trying to look for Gandalf, the other dwarves were trying to get a fire started, but couldn’t. Then they sent Bilbo to investigate the mysterious light in the distance which they thought could help themand call for help if needed.
The dwarves come to help, while they are coming Bilbo runs behind a bush, out of sight from the trolls. One by one, they pop a sack over each dwarf’s had, then Thorin comes out and starts to fight the trolls with a burning log, which gives them wounds and burns. But one of them kicks ash into Thorin’s eyes and it stuns him long enough to tie him up into a sack.
That’s when the trolls start to argue about how to cook the dwarves, but each time they come to an agreement they start to fight again. This is because Gandalf kept saying things in each troll’s voice, so they kept fighting, but couldn’t cook the dwarves. As they are arguing, the sun comes out, and they all turn to stone, then Gandalf frees the dwarves.
Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin, and the rest of the dwarves go searching for the trolls’ cave nearby, and once they found it they opened it with the key that Bilbo found on the ground near the trolls. Inside the cave they took all of the money and all of the food that still looked edible. Along with their goods, Thorin and Gandalf each took a sword decorated with runes, while Bilbo took a knife in a leather covering.
