Rome is a republic and uses their flexible army to expand their territories. By 207 BC Rome has expanded throughout the entire Italian Peninsula and is a dominant force in the Mediterranean being a rival with Carthage.
Carthage was founded by the Phoenicians but gained independence around 650 BC. Carthage was a wealthy trading hub and because of that it had a large influence over the region and controlled many areas. Carthage had many conflicts with Rome which leads to the Punic Wars.
The first Punic War was mainly a naval battle. Carthage excelled at their navy and so had an advantage against Rome. Rome upgraded their navy and invented a bridge to board enemy ships. Rome won the First Punic War and gained control of Sicily.
In the Second Punic War a Carthaginian general named Hannibal Barca decides to lead his army equipped with elephants to travel through Spain and attack Rome from the North planning to wear them down. He is able to win some major battles but now his army is worn out. While Hannibal's army retreats Rome sends 30% of their military to destroy Carthage.
In the Third Punic War Rome decides to completely remove Carthage from the map to ensure they do not rebuild and try to interfere with Rome again. The city is burned, ransacked and salt was sown so that crops could not grow with the entire population being put into slavery.
As a result of the war Rome is able to expand with Carthage’s land and is now a very powerful force. During the war many farmers neglected their farms and many farmlands were destroyed by Carthage.
