- “Now you tell your father not to teach you any more. It’s best to begin reading with a fresh mind. You tell him I’ll take over from here and try to undo the damage... Your father does not know how to teach. You can have a seat now.”

- Miss Caroline went to the blackboard and printed the alphabet and asked the class if they knew what those were. Everybody did because most of the first grade had failed it last year.

- Day 1
- Miss Caroline ask Scout to read most of My First Reader and the stock-market quotations from The Mobile Register aloud and discovers that Scout was literate. Miss Caroline told her to tell Atticus not to teach her any more, it would interfere with her reading.

- Scout mumbled that she was sorry after Miss Caroline yelled at her.

- In my social studies class in 6th grade my regular teacher told us we were going to have a substitute the next day because she had to attend a funeral.
- I won't be in class tomorrow. I have a funeral to attend but I will be back the day after.
- The sub was very mean and she walked past my desk while I was talking to a friend and pushed me stuff on the ground and yelled at me to pick it up. I told her no because she pushed it off the desk.
- They're your books so you pick them up!!
- The next day my regular teacher came back and sent me to ISS for the class period saying I had disrespected a very kind substitute.
- You have ISS today for this class period. The sub told me how disrespectful you were being.
