So, How did the newt's poison level 10 become common in the newt population?
Well, Before snakes came into the population, there were mostly newts who had low-leveled poison trait. In the new population, however, Newts with higher level poison are adaptive traits meanwhile low-level poison was non-adaptive.
Also, The distribution of traits was pretty well rounded before the snakes came into the population. The newts weren't nearly as poisonous.
Then the snakes were slowly going into the newt's environment, eating the newts who didn't have high levels of poison. So the newts with low levels of poison were most likely to die earlier and not have any offspring.
But the newts with higher levels of poison were much more likely to survive, and that means more likely to have an offspring.
But Sherman, How do newts get the traits, though?
Good question. Their traits are determined from their genes, which they get from their parents, like humans. Genes make special proteins, and these proteins in the gene determine what trait the newt offspring will get.
Okay. I get it
Cool.
So the gene process explains how the newt's offspring inherits genes from their parents, causing some of the newts have high or low levels of poison, depending on what they get.
Another point to know is that newts with higher level (Poison level 10) of poison did exist in the population before snakes. Some of the newts had mutations in their genes, which are just random changes in the DNA/structure of the gene that can introduce new traits into populations.
But there's one twist; the mutations can actually become an adaptive trait in the population.
However, they would need to find a partner to do that. If they don't, the mutation wouldn't become common. This would be called natural selection, which causes a population to change overtime.
Okay Thank you, Sherman!
Now, all of that information explains how Poison level 10 became more common in the newt population!
Now I learned a lot more about newts! Thanks Sherman!
