Storyboard Text

  • Amidst the Boko Haram insurgency, the Niger Delta region faced its own set of challenges. The long-standing issues of resource control, environmental degradation, and economic disparities came to a head, leading to increased militancy and violence. Oil installations were frequently targeted, disrupting the nation's main source of revenue and exacerbating the already tense socio-political climate. My dad all the way in Nigeria was affected by the economic unrest and as a result, he was laid off from his Senior Engineering job at an Oil Rig for Chevron.
  • At the time, Nigeria was grappling with economic uncertainties, and my parents, like many others, sought opportunities abroad to provide a more stable and promising environment for their family. The decision to move to the UK was not an easy one, as it meant leaving behind familiar surroundings, family, and friends. As my parents prepared for this life-altering journey, I, being too young to comprehend the magnitude of the decision, was blissfully unaware of the challenges that lay ahead. The airport scenes and the flight itself are mere fragments of a memory that I cannot fully reconstruct. Yet, the echoes of those moments reverberate in the stories my family tells, capturing the mix of anticipation and apprehension that accompanied our departure from Nigeria.
  • I hope we can have a better life in the UK.
  • I'm so scared of planes.
  • In the UK, the infrastructure and amenities were a testament to a well-established society. The roads were meticulously laid out, public services were efficient, and the education system promised a world-class learning experience for my sister and me. Access to healthcare was not just a privilege but a fundamental right, providing a sense of security that was a stark departure from the uncertainties we had faced back home. The economic landscape of the UK offered my parents a chance to thrive professionally. Employment opportunities were diverse, and the competitive job market encouraged personal and career growth.
