  • The election of 1860 happened on November 6, 1860. Abraham Lincoln sweared to ambolish slavery in the North without meddling with the South. People of the South did not want Lincoln as president because they saw it as the greatest evil to fall upon their country.

  • On October 16, 1859 there was a raid on Harpers' Ferry. John Brown led 21 men there to steal weaponns to give to the slaves but was later hung and known as a martyr for this raid. He lead the raid because he wanted to invade the south and end slavery. This raid just brought more tension between the North and the South. The Sout became afraid and was further pushed to secession.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act/“Bleeding Kansas” (Jan. 23, 1854)
  • The Compromise of 1850 happened on Janurary 29, 1850. During this time there was a lot of tension between the North and South. There was a Fugitive Slave Act in place that reqiued people who were in free states to capture and return slaves. During this time there were slaves escaping from the south and were heading to the North. The south wanted the North to capture and return slaves but the North didn't believe the law was right so they refused.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin (March 20, 1852)
  • March 15, 1857 there was a court case and it was reffered to as the Dred Scott decision. There was a slave named Dred Scott and he thought he could become a free man by escaping and moving into a free territory. The case went to court because they didn't know if a black man could sue and be considered a free man. The court ruled that he was slave property and not a citizens so he didn't have the right to sue for his freedom. Both the Kansas Newbraska Act and the MO compromise was a violation of the 5th Amendment.
  • On Janurary 23, 1854, the Kansas Nebraska Act was put in place.This Act made the North mad while the South was trying to push slavery. The South decided to make their territory Slave territory. The act occured when senator Douglas had the idea that popular soverighty residents of the territory would make the decision about slavery. The boarder ruffians came from MO into KS and attacked anti slavery settlers and voted illegally in the elections.
  • Harriet Beacher Stowe wrote a book called Uncle Tom's Cabin on March 20, 1852. This book told the story of a slave that was trying to escape with her baby and a slave named Tom who was whipped to death by the slave owners. This book shined a different light on slavery and people realized that this wasn't just politecal and it was immoral. This book had an effect on both the North and the South. The North protested the Fugitive Slave Act and the South felt that it was personally agianst them
