In the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act required the north to capture slaves from the south and return them. This increased tensions because northerners felt that the law was unjust and shouldn't have to capture slaves.
Dred Scott Decision (1857)
A book that argued slavery was a political and moral issue. One of the first writings argued against the idea of slavery as it showed the cruelness of the way they were treated. Northerners increased their protest against the Fugitive Slave Act while southerners condemned the book and it was a false depiction of slavery and their way of life.

Senator Stephen Douglas (IL) proposed the ideas of popular sovereignty -residents of the territory would decide the issue of slavery. This led to war because it angered northerners as slavery could expand where it had been prohibitedunder the MO Compromise. It also violated the 5th Amendment.
Election of 1860 (1860)
A slave from Missouri who believed he escaped bondage by living in a free territory. The Supreme Court had a method to end slavery concerning in territories. The north was shocked, because the highest court in America had declared it illegal for Congress to abolish slavery.
John Brown led a group of 21 men in orderto seize the federal arsenal and distribute the weapons to slaves. He did that in order to begin a slave uprising, invade the South, and end slavery. As a result it turned out to be utter failure, Brown was hung for treason, northerners viewed Brown as martyr, and Southerners terrified and propelled the South toward secession
The election allowed Lincoln to get more electoral votes than he would otherwise. Southerners believed if Lincoln was elected President that "itwould be the greatest evil that hast ever befallen this country“. Southern states began to secede starting with South Carolinaon December 20th, 1860.
