Storyboard Text

  • The Sun emits heat, also known as UV radiation, and it makes its way to our Earth.
  • Most of the UV radiation is absorbed by the Earth's surface, while some is reflected and sent back into space.
  • The UV radiation that passes through the atmosphere is absorbed and distributed in different direction by greenhouse gases (GHG).
  • While the GHG trap the heat from the sun and warm the Earth's surface, infrared radiation is emitted by the Earth's surface and humans.
  • Anthropogenic and natural sources of GHG include carbon dioxide and also come from burning fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and petroleum.
  • Effects of increased and natural levels include climate change, melting ice caps, respiratory diseases, and wildfires.
  • With the infrared radiation being trapped in our atmosphere, it is warming our oceans and affecting those ecosystems. It's affecting our air, our water, our oceans, and every life on the planet.
  • Light and radiation are reflected by a surface - this is known as albedo. A change in albedo could contribute to climate change - the lower the albedo, the more radiation from the Sun gets absorbed by the planet.
  • The Greenhouse Effect is essentially a cycle, but one with rising stakes. As more heat and infrared radiation are trapped in the atmosphere, the Earth's temperature will only continue to rise.
