  • Bioaccumulation of Mercury occurs when there is more mercury in the animal than in the ecosystem, for example fish and shellfish. Bio amplification of mercury in food chain occur because predators regularly consume organisms lower on the food chain, the concentration of mercury in their bodies increase with each organism they consume.
  • Short-term exposure to high levels of inorganic mercury can cause toxicity to the kidney, nervous system and heart, and can also cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, metallic taste in the mouth, and severe abdominal cramping. Long-term exposure, even to lower levels, has also been associated with kidney damage. symptoms of the minamata disease include loss of sensation in the hands and feet and hearing impairment.

  • Mercury exposure in society can lead to a variety of other negative health effects, including neurological, kidney, gastrointestinal, genetic, cardiovascular and developmental disorders, and even death. The lack of effort that the provincial government of Ontario put into cleaning mercury out of the ecosystems leads to an increase in the number of cases of the above mentioned conditions.
