- Within a species there can be many variations, did you know that there are 9 sub species of giraffe, they all have difference patterns on the skin!
- Survival of the fittest
- yum yum I am full !
- All giraffes have long necks now, however originally they had short necks. So there had to be some overproduction to survive as they needed longer necks to reach better food. As they adapted the giraffes started to reproduce and now there are only long necked giraffes.
- Advantageous characteristics inherited
- Oh my babies - you all have such lovely long necks - something you inherited from me!
- Struggle for existence within species is where they will compete for survival, like food, water, where they live.
- Gradual change
- We once had short necks but over thousands of years they have gotten longer!!
- So what happened to Grandpa Terry then??
- The giraffe with the longer next is more likely to survive longer - this survival of the fittest!
- Its not fair I cant reach - i'm so hungry!
- Genes passed on from parents to off spring, like their long necks, are good as this helps them to survive.
- The long necked giraffes we have now evolved their long necks over thousands of years, by natural selection, as the longer necked giraffes survived and where able to pass on their genes.
