  • Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Tūruki is a visioner and the founder of Ringatū faith during his time in jail on Chatham Island . Ringatū faith is one of the remain indigenous religious system in Aotearoa and to this day Ringatū faith is still in practice with seven regional branches across Aotearoa registered under Hāhi Ringatū.
  • Te Kooti served in the government force when he was accused as a spy. He was arrested for almost two days but was released due to lack of evidence against him.
  • When the repel was sent to exile he was included because of all the allegations that was made against him . There was no direct proof of his involvement. According to Greenwood (1942) Te Kooti was indiscriminately detained and was sent into exile without trial.
  • During his days in exile, Te Kooti revealed he heard Gods voice directing him to teach the people. It also talked about how Te Kooti was able to prove to the other prisoners that he was the chosen one .
  • According to Greenwood (1942) the impact of this led him gained mana and fame which encourages the escape with the 300 prisoners (hauhau followers) to Whareongaonga by capturing of the Rifleman (supply ship)
