Communism had been gaining popularity, which scared the U.S. The United States began aiding other countries falling under Communism. Tensions escalated more when the U.S. joined NATO.
The U.S. introduced the Marshall Plan after WWII. The Marshall Plan was a way to rehabilitate Europe's economy. The Soviet Union did not like this and created Comecon, their own stimulus package.
Conflicts between these two powers were known as "proxy" wars
Both the United States and the Soviet Union were devoted to their own philosophies. The U.S. supported democracy and Capitalism, while the Soviet Union had a goal to spread Communism.
Although the Cold War was not a physical war there were still many conflicts between these two powers. This war lasted 40 years. The Soviet Union fell apart and so did it's Communist government.
