Various artefacts intended for use in the afterlife were buried with the deceased and death masks were used to both help the soul recognise its body and to protect the dead person from evil spirits in the afterlife.

Eat up Ammit!
In the final part of the journey to the afterlife the gods of the dead performed the "weighing of the heart" ceremony to judge whether the person's earthly deeds were virtous.
If the heart is pure and weighs less than the feather, the soul can sail away into the afterlife on the god Ra’s boat - the deceased had achieved immortality!
If the heart was full of sin and was heavier than the feather, the soul could not pass into the afterlife and would be eaten by Ammit (a creature that was part crocodile, lion and hippopotamus).
