  • Ancient Egyptians also believed in afterlife. During their life, they tried to do good deeds so that their hearts would be light and they would be granted immortality.

  • Mummification was an essential part of ancient Egyptian funerals as it was believed that this was the only way a body could be used in the afterlife.The mummification process for nobles and pharaohs was quite different than the process of the poor which simply involved a grave in the hot, dry sand of the desert.

  • Various artefacts intended for use in the afterlife were buried with the deceased and death masks were used to both help the soul recognise its body and to protect the dead person from evil spirits in the afterlife.

  • In the final part of the journey to the afterlife the gods of the dead performed the "weighing of the heart" ceremony to judge whether the person's earthly deeds were virtous.
  • If the heart is pure and weighs less than the feather, the soul can sail away into the afterlife on the god Ra’s boat - the deceased had achieved immortality!
  • If the heart was full of sin and was heavier than the feather, the soul could not pass into the afterlife and would be eaten by Ammit (a creature that was part crocodile, lion and hippopotamus).
