  • Students in Soweto couldn't stand being forced to learn Afrikaans in schools so everyone didn't show up to school and spread a rebellion across Soweto. Up until then, they have been learning English and their native language. For people with already poor learning conditions, this was the last straw.
  • Protest to Riot
  • The strike didn't really work as an attempt to change how the schools were taught, so they started a peaceful protest. Around 20,000 students participated in this protest just outside of Jhoannesburg.
  • Aftermath
  • Around 1,500 policemen showed up at the protest and shot firearms into the crowd injuring some and killing some. They drove helicopters monitoring the area from the sky. The SA army was also ordered on standby as a tactical measure to show military force.
  • The Impact
  • Due to the death, the protest became a riot because the police shot innocent people all for trying to have a word for the school system. The riot has lasted for days and as a result, 175 people died and over 1,200 has been injured.
  • The uprising was a turning point for the liberation of SA. Riots were frequently happening for the next year and there were around 500/600 reported deaths and about 4,000 injured because of the police.
  • The Soweto Uprising of 1976 is one of the best-known events in SA and changed everyone's view on racism in SA. Images that were from the riot were posted everywhere making everyone aware of the event and what it has caused. Many people were injured but SA has changed for the better.
