- It's fine. I never liked that job anyway.
- Rationalization: Elizabeth's dad got fired from his job! He says that he doesn't care because he never liked the job anyway, but he's still sad about it. Rationalization is when you offer self-justifiable explantations in place of more conscious reasons.
- Hey Honey. I'm home from work. I have very bad news. I got fired!
- Oh no! What will we do now!
- Honey come sit down. It's time to eat.
- Denial: Elizabeth's dad completely denies the bullying that she has faced because of her leg because he believes that she is very strong and powerful enough to tell her teachers. Denial is when you refuse to believe painful realities.
- That's impossible! No daughter of mine would ever let herself get bullied!
- Mom, Dad, I have something to tell you. I'm getting bullied at school because of my robotic leg.
- Sublimation: As Elizabeth runs on the treadmill she knows that instead of getting angry and throwing a fit, she should work on getting stronger so she can never get bullied again. Sublimation is when people transfer unacceptable impulses into socially valued motives.
- It's okay, even if my parents don't believe me and I'm angry, people will never bully me again because I will get stronger!!
