Jude finds the courage to talk to Stella outside the theater, "My mama-" Jude took a breath. "My mama's name is Desiree Vignes" (Bennet 278) This conversation leads to old memories about their family's past, in addition to Stella's secret to pass as a white woman. This changes the dynamic of the story because this forces Stella in a weird spot having to chose between her twin sister or her new life as a white woman.
