  • And so todays biology class was a little different.
  • So there is indeed a reason the rest of the class got sick while you didn’t.
  • Your body has multiple genius ways to defend itself from disease causing organisms or “pathogens”.
  • First of all, there is non-specific immunity. This means an automatic defense system against any foreign particle that enters the body. Foreign particles could be caught by…
  • Hair and cilia found in your nose which act as a sort of filter for foreign particles..
  • Mucus, which is found in the nose, throat, lungs and sinuses. Due to its stickiness, it can easily catch pathogens and get rid of them by sneezing or coughing.
  • Stomach acid, which has a PH low enough to destroy most pathogens.
  • Your skin, the wall that let’s nothing through. It’s outer layer, the epidermis, is mainly made of dead cells. Oils on it prevent pathogen growth.
  • White blood cells, also called phagocytes, identify pathogens and destroy them by engulfing and “eating” them.
  • Now it makes sense that my cut didn’t get infected!
  • Seems like all this immunity thing didn’t work for the rest of the class though…
  • That’s not true! Your classmates are experiencing another type of immunity right now.
