The U2 spy planes were used to, well spy. They were flying over Cuba and took Images of the ICBMs being moved into Cuba. This Started The Cuban Missle Crisis, and became one of the first major events in The Cold War.

Kennedy decided to place a naval blockade around Cuba. The aim of this "quarantine," as he called it, was to prevent the Soviets from bringing in more military supplies. He demanded the removal of the missiles already there and the destruction of the sites.
