Storyboard Text

  • Jake by Jim Bartlett
  • I hope that by sleeping into the darkness of a nap, I will temporarily mask my sorrow.
  • Jake by Jim Bartlett
  • the sickness took Max quickly rather than dragging out the pain for weeks, maybe even months
  • Jake by Jim Bartlett
  • Unable to sleep, he looks around the all too empty room, letting his gaze fall upon the leash, which still hangs from the peg by the door.
  • Jake's eyes open wide as he hurriedly moves to the side. But, like his broken heart, the seat on the couch where Max used to sit is now vacant. He takes a long, deep breath more of a sigh and squeezes his eyes shut, trying to briefly disguise his sadness by sinking into the darkness of a nap.
  • Jake by Jim Bartlett
  • They were inseparable for fifteen years. Always on the same side. The soft waves crashing on the shore, the birds cawing. On those hot sunny days, those excursions on the trail where the trees canopied over them like arches, enclosing them in a soothing cold shadow. They always rode together to the grocery store, even if it was merely to pick up something Martha had forgotten.

  • Even while he understands that he should be grateful for their time together those moments that will live on in his heart forever he still feels deceived. He's missing out on years that could have been.
  • Jake by Jim Bartlett
  • I guess you do know, don’t you, Jake.
  • As his eyes well up, he realizes for the first time how much his grief weighs, how hard it is to even rise with such a heaviness inside.
  • It seems to wait patiently, ever ready for that next big adventure.
  • It is then he hears a shuffle from behind and turns to see Martha standing in the doorway, her shoulder resting against the frame.
  • I thought you might be in here.I miss him, too, Jake. More than you’ll ever know
  • Her speech has a distant mournful tone, but he knows her heart, like his, has a void too huge to fill. His head drops, and he lets out another long sigh, prompting her to approach him and kneel by him on the carpet. She elevates his chin with one hand, then tucks his long, floppy ears back so their sad eyes can connect.
