HBC was founded on May 2, 1670 when King Charles granted a charter to his cousin, Prince Rupert. Prince Rupert used the charter to create HBC.

Not long after HBC was founded, NWC was also created and became a large fur-trading company which created lots of rivalry between the two. NWC grew faster than HBC.

HBC opened up trading posts and sent out canadian voyageurs to transport fur from the inland posts to the coast.

In the end NWC failed in the 1780s, leaving HBC known as the best fur-trading company. It's the oldest company in Canada and is still thriving to this day.
